Day 1 - The Journey Out Manchester to Calgary

5:45am  Bummer -woke up at about 5:45am. Blamed Mary's snoring but perhaps a little bit excited?
What a smooth start to the holiday. Taxi turned up at 10 and we were all ready - including hair and everything. 10:45 at airport and no queue for boarding tickets. Got a window seat (yet to be proven of course). Now the long wait for the plane.
Girls already been shopping, bought lip balm with own money, then cakes and coke and magazines with mine.
Mary just returned with her magazine and we are beginning to get hungry.

12:45am  Lunch done. I had 2 sensible sandwiches, Mary had a fried bacon and fried egg toast sandwich, girls had chicken McSomething burgers and chips (I helped them finish!) Good old Dad now sitting like a pudding whilst, armed with boarding passes, the ladies attend to the smellies in the duty free shop.

In the Air at Last  Been in the air 15 mins or so. I got the window seat nyah, nyah, na, nyah nyah. Poor old hostess had to do all the gesticulations in two languages. Picture that if you can!

20:10 (13:09 MST - Mountain Standard Time). Now we've eaten, drunk, snoozed and watched 2 films, Man in Iron Mask and Good Will Hunting. Been in the air a long time and the toes are just beginning to feel like the inter-tarsal fluff is a teensy bit damp. Approx. 1 hour ago (I think) Greenland's icecap was impressive as were various stages of ice, pack ice, ice floes then small bergs in estuaries. Still got the sun ahead and to the left so we haven't really started heading SW towards Calgary.

Now the films have finished, girls are into magazines and Mary has had her 3rd little wander about. I am exercising by scrunching that toe-lint around, safe in the knowledge no-one knows I'm doing it. Tee Hee!

Switching over to MST  15:06 (22:06 BST). But then it gets better. We get an afternoon snack at 3ish even tho' we think it is 10 at night. And we get another film (Bill Murray in The Man Who Knows Too Little) AND Lucy goes up to see the driver with lots of dials and buttons.

Calgary at Last  16:45 (23:45) Off the plane, 29C, baggage all sorted then relative merits of taxi versus shuttle. Taxi won because it was yellow like in the movies. Driven by a Jamaican. Rush Hour took us 30 mins to get to Prince Royal Inn Hotel (nowadays called The Hawthorn Hotel & Suites, Calgary Downtown). It is very hot. $28 + tip so still cheaper than shuttle ($8 per person). Suite in hotel on 12th floor 1215. Twin room, no air conditioning except windows open slightly and a fan in each bedroom. Cable TV but Katie didn't object much later that evening when we said no.

We all dozed but Mary sorted out the lie of the land. Katie Mary and I went walkies about 8pm (that's seriously tomorrow by body clock!). Lucy had zonked so didn't come. I think 36 hours from Poland followed by 7 hour flight and losing 7 hours as well has taken its toll on her. Mary had a beef sarnie with stuff, Katie and I just had coke. I had a Rennie when we got back.

and so to bed  9:45 (4:45am tomorrow BST!) All tucked up in bed with very gritty eyes. Fans left on, windows open, earplugs in. Very hot.
3:30am (10:30am same day) Awake, feeling mildly hung over. Several people restless and popping to the loo. Very hot still. Earplugs keeping fan noise out.
Thought Katie had been in the loo about 2 hours - rationalised that to jetlag problems - but I must have dozed off when she came out. All that time I needed to go and it wasn't occupied!
