The Andrews Family on Tour - Canada 1998

Why Canada?

Like many people we have distant relatives in Canada. In our case Alberta and British Columbia. This means we have seen and heard a great deal about the place. Mary's parents visited the area over 20 years ago and the scenery looked spectacular. We had decided to do a "memorable trip" before the family began to split up (our eldest daughter being about to start University). Canada was the obvious choice

Specific Requirements

  • The Athabascar Glacier, because Mary's parents had stood on it all those years ago
  • Scenery and walking - in our case this meant the Rockies
  • Whale Watching - hence Victoria
  • Chill Out - there was to be a lot of driving so a few days rest towards the end was required - hence Whistler
  • And finally . . . . Shopping (for 2 teenage daughters and a wife) - hence Vancouver.

Itinerary

  • Fly from Manchester to Calgary
  • Calgary to Banff
  • From Banff to Jasper stopping off at Lake Louise and the Athabascar Glacier on the Icefield Parkway.
  • Start the journey to the coast - Jasper to Clearwater
  • Clearwater to Harrison Hotspings
  • Hotsprings to Victoria on Vancouver Island via the ferry
  • Ferry from Vancouver Island to mainland for journey to Whistler
  • R&R in Whistler then travel down to Vancouver
  • Final 2 days in Vancouver before the long journey home

The Diary

This was our first BIG adventure abroad, so I decided to keep a set of notes to help me remember the events of each day. On my return I enjoyed creating a typed Scrap Book together with all the memorabilia - tickets, brochures, postcards and photographs. Each web page is a diary day, using the original words (but laid out for browsing) and may contain links to photographs that will pop up in the middle of the screen like so. I have tried to provide a simple navigation system - only you can tell if it works.

The Photo Gallery

I have provided a Photo Gallery of Thumbnail images. Clicking any of them will pop up a larger version

The Links Page

Links to sites of places we visited or I found during my information gathering before and after the holiday.
